The Grandest Grand March at this Kansas Wedding!

Hello, hello! This gorgeous wedding took place out in Ellinwood, Kansas.  The day was a blast, the family was a ton of fun, and everything was wonderful!  The wedding color was a burgundy color complimented with red roses.  The day began at the Bride's home where a stylist did their makeup and hair.  The groomsmen were doing whatever groomsmen do in another location, where my second photographer spent part of the morning.  The couple chose to do a First Look prior to the ceremony so we had time to complete the formals and bridal party photos before mass.  There were four parent groups for this bride & groom so they had plenty of help throughout the day! Due to this, the family formals required a lot of logistics as people tended to go missing when it was their turn for photos.  =)  However, we had a shot list and everyone was eventually found, so we managed to get all of the photos requested in a reasonable amount of time and no one was harmed during the process!

The wedding ceremony took place at a Catholic church in Ellinwood complete with a bubble exit, and followed by a reception at a nearby hall that was decked out with decorations, twinkle lights, and lots and lots of guests! This was also my first experience with a "Grand March", which was soooo much fun! One of the couples attending the reception began the grand march by leading all of the guests, hand in hand, in a giant snake pattern in and around the hall until everyone was connected.  Once everyone was a part of the line, they began making a tunnel with their partner.  The guests following had to go under the tunnel made by the previous couples (STILL hand in hand!) until the room was filled with a giant tunnel for the Bride and groom to go through.  But wait..there's more! After the giant tunnel everyone joins hands again to begin making a giant spiral around the Bride & Groom, who stayed in the center of the spiral and would then go into their first dance.  As the photographer I was not able to get the full experience of this grand march, but I took my turn going through the tunnel and took a lot of fun pictures along the way!  My second photographer ended up trapped in the middle of the spiral with the Bride & Groom.  This was convenient to take some close up shots, but it turns out she is claustrophobic and didn't enjoy it as much as one might have thought, LOL.  I got to enjoy the view from the outside of the circle, including almost getting knocked off a chair by the moving spiral!  But again..no one was harmed, including our cameras, so it was a success! The reception also included the shoe game, which is always fun, a garter toss, where the garter was wrapped around a football autographed by the Bride & Groom, bouquet toss, and two of the most touching parent dances I have ever watched.

The wedding cake was absolutely gorgeous with the dark red roses and textured icing.  It was complimented by a couple of smaller cakes on either side that rested beautifully on a tree-trunk-type base.  The table also adorned an "ugly bell", as one of the Mom's nicely put it, that must have been a family tradition or just an inside joke.  So naturally, I made sure to get at least two photos included that particular momento..who wants to forget the ugly bell? Certainly not me!

A Wedding Story | Abilene | Manhattan , Kansas Wedding Photographer

An Awesome day for a Wedding in Abilene , Kansas!

Hello! Let me share with you some of the details from a recent wedding in Abilene , Kansas. The Bride & Groom are AMAZINGLY in love and it shines through every fiber of their being.  They actually met in a bar out near Kansas City where they currently reside.  So if you are still looking for your mate at a bar, there are occasionally some good ones there! ;)

The day started at the salon where the Bride's mother, a hair dresser conveniently, and a couple other stylists were getting the gals ready to go.  There was fruit, lots of coffee (naturally), and definitely excitement.  Once they were done we headed over to the church for the dress and other finishing touches.  The Groom & his Groomsmen wore white lilies with their Lego superhero attached to the stem of the boutonniere!  Prior to the ceremony the Bride requested a non-visual First Look so her and her fiance could talk prior to the wedding without seeing each other, and her first response when she knew he was on the other side was sweet emotion.

The ceremony was conducted by a pastor who knew the families and the strong faith that runs throughout the families on both sides so it was really a beautiful, touching ceremony.  You could see the joy in the tears of the Bride as her father walked her down the aisle, and in the huge smile on the Groom's face once he saw her for the first time.

After the ceremony the Bridal Party headed over to a local park for some fun photos with an antique vehicle that is part of the family that is perfectly coordinated with the wedding colors of blue and coral! (How awesome is that!?).  The Bride & Groom are SO much fun and we had a great time.  My favorite part is definitely when I asked the Bride to sit on the vintage Chevy they were driving for the day, not realizing how good of a wax job had been done, and she slid right off.  The Groom, in all his wit, posed perfectly in response to it thus giving me my favorite image from the day.  It is the kind of image that made my abdomen hurt from laughing so hard!  There is nothing I love more than true love and a good time!

The reception was decorated beautifully, including a nice display for lost family and friends that had passed away.  Each photo had a trinket that represented them during their life.  It was heart-wrenching for sure and such a very nice touch.  The cake stood on a tree stump carved with their initials and surrounded by cupcakes.  The Bride surprised her new Mr. by singing the song "At Last" better than anyone I have ever heard, including the original artists! It was amazing! The whole day was a success and I cannot wait to share their images with them!

Why I Became a Wedding Photographer

Wedding Photographers.. crazy or brave?

When "non-photographer people" find out I am a wedding photographer, I often get one of these responses, "you must be brave, that is way too much pressure," or "wow, you must be crazy, I could never shoot weddings!"  Honestly, I would have to say that as a wedding photographer, I am a bit of both!  I am pretty sure it is required.

I shot portraits for years and never planned on shooting weddings regularly.  I can admit, the pressure of missing those once-in-a-lifetime moments was a bit intimidating at first! But after a few years as my business really began to grow, I realized it was time for me to step out of my comfort zone and accept the next challenge in my photography journey.  And honestly, I love it!

I began by second shooting for a couple of other photographers that generously let me tag along to get the gist of being a wedding photographer, and I photographed my very first wedding on my own shortly after.  Granted, I didn't win a pulitzer prize for those wedding pictures (or whatever the photographer related prize would be!), but the couple was thrilled with their photos and I learned a lot just from that one experience.  I can read books until I am blue in the face, but you really can't grow in photography without the hands on experience.  Over the next twelve months I photographed TWELVE weddings.  This might not seem like a lot, but for someone that had decided just months before to take on weddings, but I was surprised! My goal was one wedding a month, and that was what I got..kind of.  It ended up being more like one wedding here-one wedding there-and then Hello Spring and Fall!-where I had three weddings in the same month a few times.  Anyhow, enough of the back story I think...

What I have learned throughout my experiences are that weddings are a thrill!  My personal style is to portray images that are Fun, Real, and Beautiful.  When I decided on these aspects as my ultimate goals I was only shooting portraits.  I chose those particular words because I felt (and still feel) that it is the only way to encompass everything about a couple, individual, or family when photographing them.  Weddings give me ALL of these things!  From the women getting ready in the morning, to the vows and time spent alone with the couple, and of course the party in the evening, it is a constant opportunity to shoot what I love.  Though the day flies by in a whirlwind,  once it is over I always have images that are amazing that I could never get from just shooting portraits.  I am referring to those awesome wedding moments such as Mom putting the veil on the Bride, the Bride holding back tears as she walks down the aisle, the tear on Dad's cheek during the father-daughter dance, and of course all of the laughter and partying that takes place in between.  And, I am happy to announce that I have never missed those once-in-a-lifetime moments that I was worried about before I got started.  =)  

Wedding photographers have to be a little crazy AND brave to gladly accept the challenge of photographing the most important day of many peoples' lives from start to finish.  For example, there are a lot of details that are very important to different people for different reasons, the environment and locations are constantly changing and unpredictable in most cases, the lighting isn't always awesome (I love an old church as much as the next person, but whoever built the church with green and white walls and yellow lights was clearly not thinking of the wedding photographer at the time!), and there are a lot of emotions all around you throughout the day.  However, there is beauty to be found in all of these moments.  Each couple has a unique love and a unique story to be told, and every time I am chosen to be the one documenting this day I am both humbled and honored.  So thanks to those that have come on this crazy ride with me, and I look forward to embarking on this same journey with those of you that are just starting to plan your own Wedding day!

A Lawrence Kansas Wedding Story | Manhattan, KS Photographer

KU says I Do at Maceli's Lawrence

You may have seen this couple in an earlier blog when I did their engagement pictures at Kansas University Lawrence.  These Jayhawk fans, and alumni, whose first initials happened to be KU, were SO much fun to work with and I thoroughly enjoyed taking their photos.

Their wedding took place at Maceli's in Lawrence, KS and had so many wonderful details.  The tables were decorated with handmade signs with their favorite love-related movie quotes, the Bridesmaids wore Royal Blue (KU Blue!) dresses and had these awesome, coral-colored heels to go with it.  The wedding cake was decorated with none-other-than the Bride & Groom made out of clay and sitting on the Groom's SUV.  It was awesome!

The wedding was beautiful, with the Bride walking down the stairs being escorted by her beaming Father, and a unity sand ceremony where they mixed the KU colors in a picture frame showing their favorite engagement photo.

After the wedding we headed down the street to take some photos of the bridal party and Bride & Groom.  Everyone did awesome considering it felt like 100 degrees outside, and I wasn't wearing a suit! Once the photos were done, however, the fun began! There was an awesome DJ, lots of dancing, laughing, and wonderful memories to be had.

This was an all-around awesome group and it was so much fun spending the day with everyone!
